Q & A Interview with Upcoming Artist

Jimmy Brown from “Dust from 1,000 years”

Brought to you by: Angelia Berry

1. Q: “How would you describe your music?”

A: “I try to strive to make uncategorizable music, to broaden what can’t be labeled, or stamped. I want to make it difficult to be categorized. It does however have a Synthesizer driven Psychedelic feel.”
2. Q: “What inspires you to make music?”

A: Honestly, some of my strongest inspirational people are in bands we’ve already played with and get us shows. Take for instants in Boston there’s a band called “Fat History Month” it’s just a Two Piece “ Guitar & Drums” But they really do sound like no other Two piece with how thick their sound is along with range that Shawn uses they are musically made for one another these guys.”

3. Q: “Where did you grow up and how did this influence your creativity?”

A: “ Well, I grew up here in Bloomington. I would say my Late Elementary School Music Teacher it’s Dr. Estabrook but it was Dr. Sarah Stevens who is no longer with us she was like my Muse from Grade School on Up. Through Middle School in Trinorth I looked to Bob Austin, North it was Janis Stalkhouse. I was just Lucky to have those types of musical masters to help develop my music comprehension.”

4. Q: “What gear do you use to create your music?”

A: “ In Marching Band in High School I played the Drums, but these days you can find me behind my Roland Juno-D, or my M-Audio Midi Keyboard with several empty banks where tones can be saved, I line out USB to my Ipad where I sample from a (Garage) application. So, on (Workshop) I sample a bunch of Organs: Wurlitzer’s / Hammonds. I send, and use the M-Audio Midi Keyboard to trigger the samples as my Lead Key Tones, and use the Roland Juno-D under that for the Bass Tones/ Semi Tones. Located Above those two things a Roland SP555. It’s a (Multi Effects Samplers) that I line out both of those signals to the sampler and sequence loops and accompany myself in layers making it pretty rich and creamy that way. Then when accompanied with a swelling sound from a guitar, it gets fun. As for the (Roland 707 Rhythm Controller) I’ve recently acquired has become a rhythm solution for all my music. It’s so easy to program a pattern.”

5. Q: “What are your feelings about using software?”

A: ”Truly revolutionary wonderful tools.”

6. Q: “How do you feel about electronic music now and where do you see it going?”

A: “Well it seems to be the most rapidly developing and explored area of music now. I feel it’s just going to continue to become more experimental, and who aspires to do so will push themselves to find sounds that are harder to obtain, and music will become more dynamic oppose to things that have become repetitive. Keep things fresh, and not just for the listeners but for other musicians. If Musicians start growing off of other musicians that when music is most inspiring.”

7. Q: “Do you have out an EP or album?”

A: “ Dust from 1,000 year has 7 Albums, a DVD, and our latest one as a 12” Vinyl Press by: Sound Workshop with Mike Nataro (Bass/Drummer/ Mastering Engineer using the program “Samplitude”.) from band Ponyboy.”

8. Q: ”In terms of live performance of electronic music, what would you consider “entertaining”?”

A: Jimmy Hendricks / Sonic Youth / Ponyboy / Gravitas

9. Q: “Are there other interests or creative endeavors which inspire you?”

A: I Play, and Run Extra Curricular Chess Class for over 10 years, with a Annual (4 player team) School Tournament that is held in Terre Haute.

10. Q: “Can you describe an exceptional performance moment (or venue) which sticks out in your mind?”

A: “ Venues like: (Mahoney Tabernacle, 12th and Park) have been my favorite over the years to play at. As far as Exceptional Performances go there was a show at club in Austin, Massachusetts (Gay Gardens). A Inebriated guy decided to join our friends. (The Zookeepers) “On Stage” While they were playing, the drummer got up and pushed the guy off the stage, but the drunk guy continued to climb the stage with his party cup taking the microphone from the Vocalist hands everyone couldn’t help but to laugh at the situation.

11. Q: “What has helped you the most to get where you are today and do you have any advice for up and coming artists?”

A: “Get a hold of (Sound Workshop) South Walnut, (Magnetic South) on South Washington, also (Bloomington Basements). If you go on tour, watch out for deer. Try to derive the inspiration from improvisation, think outside the box. Remember you are your best selling point if you’re not into it people can see that. Musicians have a special relationship of reciprocity with audiences during performances, like a conversation of equal exchange of energy on the subconscious level, so just have fun that’s what it’s all about.”

Scott Kellogg

[Bio By: Corey Brown]
Scott Kellogg, is a bassist who got his start with hardcore music in the 80′s (and remembers vinyl), but still looks forward to reinventing his musical self after 28 years of playing. Scott is our opening artist for April 6th Speed of Sound electronic music showcase.

Scott cut his teeth on American hardcore music in the 1980s, and quickly branched out into rock, blues, folk, jazz, and electronic music. He has toured the United States with Carrie Newcomer, Amanda Pearcy and other singer-songwriters. As a solo artist, Scott shines his light with compelling lyrics and a passionate stage presence. In him you find a friend and ally who interprets the world with wit and compassion. Living in Bloomington, Indiana, he is equally in the thick of American roots music as in the midst of a blossoming experimental music community. Both of these streams flow into Scott’s debut release, Silver in Their Veins, a musical statement of an artist who has spent a lifetime spanning musical genres, styles, contexts.

I’m a 22-year-old Disc Jockey from Terre Haute, IN. I’ve been DJing for about seven years and I’ve been mixing & scratching for about three. I have a pretty broad set of tastes–I started with Hip-Hop, realized I love House and will play anything with a good electronic melody in it. I’m a firm believer that as a DJ my job is to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. I like to keep audiences excited about speculating my next possible song, and I try to put new twists on old tracks that people love.

BloomingtonElectronic.com welcomes you to the second anniversary of our electronic music showcase, Speed of Sound!
FRIDAY – FEBRUARY 3RD – 8:30pm to 12:30am

For this special occasion we are proud to bring you some of our veteran performers from previous SOS shows. Instead of the usual three, our celebration will include four sets of bangin beats and sonic snacks. Enjoy some of the Cafe’s awesome edibles or sip on a tasty adult beverage while soaking in the 3D visual madness.

Get ready for:

AUDIODICS —
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Audiodics/212556745444882
http://soundcloud.com/audiodics
http://soundcloud.com/oltimeyrecordings/phil-colins-mix-1

Audiodics are Jack Kilby, Angelia Berry and Brian James Bennet, combining experimental musical elements to create sounds never heard before. The quest for the purest bass tone, melancholic vocal effects and futuristic dance rhythm swing has led these enthusiasts to abandon modern digital playback systems in favor of custom lathe cut records and feedback tone generators (just to name a few quirky devices they employ) accompanied by live instruments, including a custom bass guitar designed by Kilby.

ERSATZ MODEM —
http://soundcloud.com/ersatz-modem
http://www.bloomingtonelectronic.com/2010/10/16/ersatz-modem/
http://ersatzmodem.bandcamp.com/

“In case your wondering, the word ersatz is a German word that means substitute or replacement and is meant to suggest something of a substitute for the style of so called Intelligent Dance music of which I is am so fond. Being discouraged by the lack of this kind of music available, I decided to create my own music that possesses the attributes I find appealing, sacrificing originality of content for aesthetics.”

SHY GUY SAYS —
https://www.facebook.com/shyguysayswhat?sk=info
http://www.soundcloud.com/shy-guy-says
http://www.bloomingtonelectronic.com/2011/02/22/shy-guy-says-hello/

SHY GUY SAYS is an electronic music producer and performer straight from the Mushroom Kingdom, an 8bit villain ready to destroy any party at any time and somehow leave his victims wanting more. His eclectic, yet upbeat and danceable sound can best be described as a mixture of Hip Hop, Glitch Hop, Electro, Down-tempo House, Drum Step, and Ghettotech. It’s know for its heavy rhythmic swagger, yet at the same time can be lush and loaded with dirty synth bass sounds, warm ambiance, and 8-bit glitches.

DIOXIN ONE —
http://soundcloud.com/dioxono
http://youtu.be/p3P2hsUgrKs – Dioxin One @ Speed of Sound – Sep 9 2011

Playing drums by the age of 8, Clayton Hicks aka “Dioxin One” was primed and ready to fire off a batteries of rhythm later as a young adult. Already producing his own tracks on FL Studio by the age of 15, Dioxin has continued to hone his talents and sculpt his vision of beats and bass. He was given the name “Diox” to tag by a fellow street artist, thus birthing “DJ Dioxin.” In late 2009 Dioxin’s first exposure to the sub-genre of “Dubstep” left an indelible impression and has thus influenced much of his output today. “I heard the wobble synth and in my head I went… ‘I gotta learn how to make this.’ So I did.”

Admission is free before 9pm, and $3 at the door after that.

Expect an awesome show with our tasty 3d visuals. Help us make this celebration this biggest one ever!
